Giving God Your Best
We have often heard, “it is better to give than receive” and “give and it will come back to you”. But sometimes we only give when it is convenient. When our account, pockets or wallets have a little extra or pay day is coming up.
When giving, it is always better to give the best you can and not focus on your natural situation. Proverbs 21:26 says, “He coveteth greedily all the day long: but the righteous giveth and spareth not”. That needs to be our focus, to give without motive, complaining or a grudge.
2 Corinthians 9:6-7 says, “But this I say, He which soweth sparingly shall reap also sparingly; and he which soweth bountifully shall reap also bountifully. Every man according as he purposeth in his heart, so let him give; not grudgingly, or of necessity: for God loveth a cheerful giver”. It is important to keep our heart and mind on God at all times. Allowing God to lead us in our giving. Giving is not always about when we can afford it but when we give from the heart despite the amount we possess.
Mark 12:41-44 gives a great example of giving your last, not focusing on your own situation, faith, trust and purity. It reads, “And Jesus sat over against the treasury, and beheld how the people cast money into the treasury: and many that were rich cast in much. And there came a certain poor widow, and she threw in two mites, which make a farthing. And he called unto him his disciples, and saith unto them, Verily I say unto you, That this poor widow hath cast more in, than all they which have cast into the treasury: For all they did cast in of their abundance; but she of her want did cast in all that she had, even all her living”. Back then two mites, as called a farthing or quadrants, were equal to ¼ or a fraction of a penny. Which took about a full day of work to earn.
Deuteronomy 15:10 says, “Thou shalt surely give him, and thine heart shall not be grieved when thou givest unto him: because that for this thing the Lord thy God shall bless thee in all thy works, and in all that thou puttest thine hand unto”. In the passage it just says that she put in her money. It does not state that she was upset, was made to or weighed out her problems. But she gave without thought or grudge. You can read that when the women put in her last she caught God’s attention and he was happy with her. When we give freely we catch the attention of God. We show him that no matter what it looks like we are going to trust in him.
I mentioned above about giving in a natural sense. But it is also important to give in a spiritual sense. I was browsing through some spiritual quotes and one caught my attention, “Give God First Place”. In all your giving remember to, “Give God First Place”, remember Proverbs 21:26. When we pray, fast, teach, sing or give our lives to God. Do Not Hold Back, remember to Give God First Place when we feel rich in spirit and especially when we feel poor in spirit. Do Not Hold Back! Remember John 3:16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
